Mag may drop out with recoil 21.05.2017
I had an HS Precision rifle in .375 RUM (with HS Precision bottom metal, perhaps prior to the design improvements mentioned in the description) which I took to Africa (push-feed action, detachable mag not a good choice for dangerous game, but I was inexperienced). The rifle frequently dropped the mag on the ground with a shot, and I first thought it a problem with the latch. I sent it back to HS P and they assured me the problem was solved. It was not, and I sold the gun to a friend, with full disclosure of my concern. We were later on a safari together when (it continued to drop the mag) we figured out the problem. With a heavy recoil caliber, as the gun recoils, the shooter's finger may contact the latch release, as it is in line with the trigger, rather than below it, as in a Dakota action. Some tape wrapped around the latch release to make it require more pressure to release the mag solved the problem temporarily. A friend recently bought a custom rifle in a .300 mag and it arrived with an HS Precision bottom metal. Shot it off sticks and --- SAME PROBLEM! We are on the Brownell's site to buy a replacement bottom.
You may not have this problem with a light recoil caliber, or if shooting with the mag supported, i.e. bench or over a pack. Beware if you are shooting off-hand or off sticks. If the latch release were moved to the bottom of the trigger guard so as not to be in line with the finger upon recoil, it would solve this issue. Bottom line, I have had experience with this bottom metal twice; both drop the mag on the shot off sticks. I would only consider this bottom for light recoil calibers.
Great DBM system 18.08.2016
I got one of these for my R-700 Sendero 7mm magnum. Very easy installation. All you do is file a small part of the stock out and it fits well. I have these HS DBM systems for my other rifles too, and they're a big upgrade over the internal box system Remington has. If you have some extra money buy one.
