Not reliable for a field use!! 24.08.2014
Bummed and lost $$ on this trigger install. Judge me how you will⦠Ive been a tool room machinist and doing custom rifle work for the majority of my life and I hate to say it but Shelin is dropping the ball here! Ordered one of these when the Timney's were out of stock. Mind you this is for a reliable/safe hunting rifle and no matter how much spring tension or amount I increased engagement this trigger still would drop the firing pin while closing the bolt. Sure not when you did it very gently, like when your at the bench doing load work or shooting groups, but at least one out of every three semi aggressive cycles of the bolt the pin dropped!!! It's a great feeling trigger when it works, that's why it even gets on star from me. Other wise its a useless piece of "steel". These should not be sold as anything but bench triggers IMHO.
Getting sent back to Brownell's ASAP, sure glad they guarantee our satisfaction.
Great feel, not without issues 29.04.2013
I'm shooting a 700 SPS Tactical in .308, manufactured in 2012. Dropped this unit in and the trigger felt very crisp and broke clean. The pull weight adjustment range is perfect for the type of tactical shooting I do. I wanted something that was lighter than stock but not so light that I would be afraid of an early discharge whenever my finger contacted the trigger. One downside to the feel was the sharp edges on the trigger. I'd much rather prefer a little softening of the trigger edges so that it doesn't dig into skin as easily. This has 90 degree cuts, probably machined, with no chamfering or fillets added to the corners/edges.
Despite the great release characteristics, I quickly discovered an issue with the hammer dropping when cycling the bolt. I turned up the sear engagement and pull weight incrementally, hoping this would solve the issue, but it only mitigated the problem. At some point, the sear engagement becomes so high it feels worse than stock, and I wanted a lighter pull so I wasn't happy leaving the spring at maximum engagement. Even with the spring and sear engagement maxed out, if I slammed the bolt forward, it would "activate" the trigger such than when I lowered the bolt knob to the closed position, it would disengage the firing pin. This is a definite no-go for me since I shoot matches. I don't think it would have accidentally discharged but it could cause me to miss a crucial shot due to "misfire". I did not check with live ammo, only dummy rounds. I re-installed my stock trigger as a sanity check and it worked fine without the issue mentioned.
I contacted Shilen about this and they failed to produce an answer after 2 months of back and forth emails regarding the issue. They were responsive to my emails but at the end of the day, I still have a non-functional trigger sitting on my desk. I was never offered a replacement and I even offered to send it in to have it looked at but was told not to. Perhaps it's a common issue, perhaps it's a rare case. Who knows? Regardless, this trigger is getting returned.
